This popular tourist place of Hathni Kund Barrage in Yamunanagar shares the border of the state of Haryana with the state of Uttar Pradesh. This place also has a cut out route from here, which leads straight to Yamunanagar through Ladwa in Kurukshetra on NH 1. This barrage is at a distance of 40 kilometres from the center of Yamunanagar and it is also connected to Paonta Sahib and Dehradun. This place is often frequented by the Sikh Pilgrimages, on their way to Paonta Sahib.

History of Hathni Kund Barrage in Yamunanagar

It is a customary belief that this place derived its name because an elephant was drowned here, which belonged to the personal caravan of the Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. It is claimed by the folklore that the elephant was thrown into this Kund at the behest of the emperor, as the emperor anticipated that he would receive a golden elephant in return as he had got the information that a Paras Stone  was submerged into the river bed by a priest.

This place serves as a home ground and a waterbed for waterfowls of around 40 species and 15 of these species are permanently settled here. This barrage has the responsibility of diverting water to the western and Eastern Canal of the river Yamuna. The view here is pretty and beautiful as one can get a glimpse of the Himalayan mountain range from here and also the view of River Lapwings in its natural habitat is a mesmerizing sight to watch. During the winters, there are a large number of migratory birds, who visit this place as the water is mostly stagnant.

Apart, from being a popular bird watching site, this place is often frequented by water rafting enthusiasts. This barrage is connected to the erstwhile Tajewala barrage and has recently replaced the Tajewala Barrage, however, the links are completely operational and these two barrages successfully divert the waters to the canals of the Yamuna River. The water rafting activities take place during the spring when the water levels are sufficient and only intermediate and beginner level water rafting is allowed here. The Hathni Kund barrage also has the distinction of giving birth to a one km sq small wetland.

There is also a Guest House of the State Electricity Department closer to this place and a Forest Rest House in the Kalesar National Park, which is in close proximity to this area and these are ideal places for accommodation, if one wishes to spend a considerable amount of time in this barrage.
