History of Yamunanagar

The city of Yamunanagar is an enthralling city in itself and has got its name because of its close proximity to the river of Yamuna, which flows through this region. Being close to the river, this land is blessed with many beautiful places, which are not only an epitome of scenic beauty but also have a rich historical relevance. The city of Yamunanagar has a history that dates back to centuries when it was founded by King Ajmer Singh  Bihana, and later on his kingdom moved to Faridabad, when his son Ajay Bihana, did not comply with the option of ruling this place. It was in 1739 when this city was demolished by nadir Shah only to be rebuilt later in 1783 by Sardar Roa Singh. The city is built on the land of Gobindpuri village, which originally belonged to the Tyagi Brahmins and was later taken over by the Government.

This enthralling city of Yamunanagar was earlier known as "Abdullahpur", and was named as "Jamnagar". However, with the passage of time, and with the mixture of different cultures because of the people who settled here, this place began to be called as "Yamunanagar". This place was then made a district in the year 1989 and it got separated from the district of Amabala, and then the major area became a city and the district now has 655 villages and 441 Panchayats.

This city has experienced the rule of different rulers and several dynasties have ruled this place before the British dominion was established like the other parts of the country. Some of the popular dynasties, which ruled this place are the Sikhs, Kushan dynasty, Gupta dynasty, Mauryan dynasty, Aryans, Mughals and many others. Rulers from all these dynasties left a sizable impact on the culture of this place and influence of all these dynasties are evident from the various religious and tourism places that are present in the city and in the nearby areas.

Some of the popular rulers, who had ruled Yamunanagar in the historic era are Ajay Bihana, King Ajmer Singh Bihana, Raja Ratan Anmol Singh and many others.

Prior to the independence, this place was a small village with a small population where majority of the people were concentrated around the railway station. The current Model Town in Yamunanagar dates back to the time of partition, when a lot of refugees migrated to this place from Punjab in Pakistan. This has led to the mixture in cultures thereby increasing the colorfulness of the city.

On an overall basis the city of Yamunanagar has a rich history, which has led to the current social fabric and socioeconomic structure of the city.
